An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a dynamic and developing team within the Liverpool City Council - the Special Educational Needs (SEN) Assessment and Pupil Support Service.

To continue Liverpool’s commitment of ensuring that children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) have a positive educational experience, we are looking for a SEND Casework Officer to work in support of pupils with Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plans. You will support the team to carry out the statutory assessment and EHC plan review process and ensure children and young people are placed and supported suitably in line with relevant legislation.

The officer will be responsible for managing a caseload of children and young people under assessment for EHC plans and a cohort of children and young people with EHC plans already in place. As the first point of contact for families, you will need excellent customer service and interpersonal skills in order to foster and maintain positive and effective working relationships with families and professionals.

The successful candidate will be able to work under their own initiative on a specified caseload and as a part of a wider team to statutory timescales and deadlines. They will have excellent mediation and negotiation skills with a proven ability to work effectively under pressure. You should have sound proven knowledge/experience in the following:

  • Recent experience of working within an educational / Children’s Services environment
  • Working experience and in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the Children and Families Act 2014 and all associated legislation including SENDIST regulations
  • Experience of effectively facilitating review meetings
  • Extensive experience of casework, including supporting families and legal challenge
  • Experience of working in partnership with other agencies to achieve positive outcomes for children and young people
  • Experience of working as part of a team, or teams, including multi-agency teams
  • Extensive experience in the use of all aspects of IT including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience of working with parents and carers
