Pensions Manager

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Pensions Manager to lead our dedicated Pensions Team within the Employee Support section. This is a pivotal role responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of pension services across the Council, schools, and commercial clients, covering LGPS, NHS, and Teachers’ Pension Schemes.

As Pensions Manager, you will oversee a team of Pensions Officers and Assistants, ensuring compliance with legislation, delivering accurate calculations, and driving continuous improvement in service delivery. You will also play a key role in shaping pension policy, managing projects, and supporting strategic decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Pensions Team, ensuring high standards and clear service objectives.
  • Interpret and implement pension legislation and policy updates.
  • Ensure compliance with Auto Enrolment and all relevant pension schemes.
  • Liaise with external bodies including LGPS, NHS Pensions, and Teachers’ Pensions.
  • Manage pension calculations, capital cost budgets, and policy development.
  • Provide training and guidance to staff and stakeholders.
  • Deputise for the Service Manager Employee Support when required.

About You

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Proven experience managing a pensions function, ideally within a local authority.
  • Strong knowledge of pension scheme regulations and employment law.
  • Experience working with HR/Payroll systems such as Midland iTrent.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
  • A proactive, detail-oriented approach with the ability to manage sensitive cases with empathy.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience with Local Government terms and conditions (Blue Book, Green Book, Teachers’ Pay).
  • Strong understanding of annual and monthly pension returns processes.
