The role:
Liverpool City Council is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Assessment Officer to join our Transactional Services division. This pivotal leadership role oversees the administration of Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Education Awards, and related schemes. You will lead a team of officers and team leaders, ensuring high-quality, customer-focused service delivery that meets legislative, policy, and performance objectives.
As Senior Assessment Officer, you will play a key part in driving continuous improvement, supporting digital transformation, and maximising income to the Council. You will also contribute to corporate priorities such as social value, equality, and sustainability, and support senior managers with data analysis, reporting, and policy implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clear, inspiring leadership to teams processing benefit claims and related enquiries
- Ensure accurate and timely processing of claims, renewals, changes of circumstances, and overpayment
- Lead on the implementation of legislative and policy changes
- Monitor and manage performance, quality standards, and customer satisfaction
- Support financial reconciliation and reporting
- Manage complex enquiries, complaints, and appeals
- Promote a positive image of Liverpool City Council through excellent service delivery
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, policies, and procedures, including Data Protection and fraud prevention
- Conduct meaningful one-to-one conversations, appraisals, and workforce planning
- Champion equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of service delivery
About You
You will have:
- Experience in a Revenues & Benefits function within a large council
- In-depth knowledge of benefit legislation and welfare systems
- Proven experience in staff management, training, and performance monitoring
- Strong decision-making, communication, and leadership skills
- Commitment to equality, non-discrimination, and customer service excellence
- Educated to A level standard or equivalent, with an IRRV qualification or equivalent experience
