This role is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and practical individual to help maintain and enhance St Helens' parks, play areas and open spaces. As an Environmental Project Officer, you will take a hands-on approach to improving the borough's green spaces, carrying out regular site visits, overseeing improvement works, managing contractors and helping to deliver a range of environmental and landscape enhancement schemes. Working closely with residents, community groups, elected members and partner organisations, you will help identify opportunities to improve parks and open spaces, ensuring they are safe, welcoming and attractive places for people to enjoy. This is a varied and rewarding role, offering the opportunity to make a visible difference to some of the borough's most valued community assets.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Coordinating improvement works across parks, play areas and open spaces.

• Managing contractors and monitoring the quality of works delivered.

• Identifying opportunities to enhance parks and community spaces.

• Working with community groups and elected members, including attending out‑of‑hours meetings.

• Identifying opportunities to enhance parks and green spaces.

• Assisting with environmental projects.

• Managing and responding to customer enquiries and complaints.

• Organising repairs, upgrades and environmental improvements.

• Supporting the delivery of play area and landscape enhancement schemes.

• Contributing to the commercial development of parks, open spaces and allotments.

• Supporting service transformation and digital/mobile system implementation.

• Promoting excellent customer care and continuous service improvement.

• Delivering parks and open spaces projects.

• Monitoring works through regular site visits.

• Liaising with internal departments and external organisations to ensure effective service delivery.

• Taking part in directorate, multi‑agency and partner projects as directed.

  
  

• Strong knowledge of environmental services, local authority operations, and relevant legislation.

What You’ll Bring

• Understanding of Health & Safety requirements.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues clearly.

• Confident problem‑solver who can think creatively and develop practical, innovative solutions.

• Ability to provide sound, objective advice and demonstrate commercial and political awareness.

• Strong relationship‑building skills, working effectively with colleagues, contractors, partners and community stakeholders.

• Ability to assess risks, prioritise tasks and manage work to tight deadlines.

• Good organisational and project management skills.

• Experience managing staff and contractors in customer‑focused environments.

• Proven experience in budget management, service performance, contract monitoring and auditing.

• Experience developing and delivering environmental projects and working with volunteers.

• GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent Level 2) and a relevant Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience.

• Confident in all spoken aspects of the role and holding a full UK driving licence.
