Advanced Practitioner Public Health – Wider and Social Determinants of Health

Sefton Council

Public Health Department

Grade Hay 6

An exciting role has developed in Sefton Council which will focus on improving health of our local people through tackling inequality by addressing the wider social determinants of health.

Our lifestyle ‘choices’ are influenced, even largely constrained by the social, economic, and environmental conditions in which we live. The actions of local authorities can influence and improve health by tackling these social determinants and include our work as an employer, as an anchor institution, through our work in communities, through securing services, through employment and skills, planning and licensing, regeneration, education. and as a champion of prevention.

Implementation of the next steps of Sefton’s Child Poverty Strategy will be a key focus of this new role and you will lead, innovate and collaborate with partners to deliver the best outcomes for our children and families across the borough. You will illustrate how the impact of the social determinants of health and especially material deprivation is shown clearly through health inequalities as set out 10 years ago in the Marmot report and in the most recent All Together Fairer Report. You will be able to clearly translate and help partners understand how people in richer areas live longer than those in poorer areas and how people in poorer areas live shorter lives and for more of that time are in poor health. Your role will be to work across the social determinants of health and create the necessary change required to increase opportunity and reduce inequalities.

This exciting role will work in collaboration across local developments and partnerships, leading on the implementation of the recommendations of the child poverty strategy, building up the assets of communities through support for local voluntary sector organisations and leadership, seeking opportunities in education and schools, culture , leisure and local sustainable development, working with partners supporting the economy and developing jobs, as well as developing the knowledge and skills of local people. It also includes improving community safety, both working directly and in partnership, helping people to feel safe and well.

This role will be one of a systems leader and manager and have additional responsibility for wider commissioned staff. The successful post holder will provide specialist public health advice on priority population needs and proven interventions to improve health, working with Elected Members, senior officers and partners together with internal and external commissioners and providers.

The post-holder will lead commissioning, oversee complex contracts and provide specialist public health advice and support for the commissioning, delivery, evaluation and performance management of cost-effective high-quality health programmes, services, and interventions for the population of Sefton, operating within an evidenced-based, outcomes focused environment.

The post holder will manage public health practitioners and have strategic oversight and operational management of the Public Health budget, managing risk and identifying opportunities to optimise budget alignment and match funding opportunities with partners.

The post holder will be locally based due to building broad local partnerships and the Public Health Team have a hybrid working approach.

Closing date for applications 23rd August 2024 and in person interviews will be held on 26th September 2024.

For further information or an informal discussion about the role, please contact Anna Nygaard, Head of Inequalities and Strategic Partnerships at anna.nygaard@sefton.gov.uk or Helen Armitage Consultant in Public Health at helen.armitage@sefton.gov.uk
