Senior Data Protection Coordinator
Are you passionate about data protection and information governance? Do you have the skills to interpret complex legislation and ensure compliance across a large organisation?
St Helens Borough Council is seeking a Senior Data Protection Coordinator to join our Information Governance Compliance and Complaints Team. This is a key role responsible for ensuring the Council complies with the UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, Freedom of Information Act 2000, and Environmental Information Regulations 2004.
In this role you will act as a Data Controller for statutory access to records and information sharing requests, providing expert advice and guidance to internal colleagues, partner agencies, and customers. You’ll also lead on the coordination and oversight of FOI, EIR, and Subject Access Requests, ensuring statutory timescales are met and corporate risk is minimised.

Roles That Matter
We’re looking for someone with:
- Strong working knowledge of UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, FOIA and EIR.
- Excellent communication and analytical skills.
- Experience in handling complex information requests and applying statutory exemptions.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- A flexible and empathetic approach to customer service and stakeholder engagement.
Your Key Responsibilities will be:
- Lead on statutory access to records and information sharing requests, ensuring lawful processing.
- Provide expert advice on data protection and FOI legislation to colleagues and external partners.
- Review case records and apply exemptions in line with legislation and ICO guidance.
- Coordinate and monitor FOI/EIR/DPA requests, ensuring timely and compliant responses.
- Deliver training and raise awareness of information governance across the Council.
- Investigate data breaches and liaise with the Information Commissioner’s Office where required.
- Maintain knowledge of relevant legislation and ensure senior managers are informed of changes.
