Are you passionate about the environment, open spaces, recycling, waste minimisation and sustainability? Join St Helens Borough Council as an Environmental Assistant and help modernise and enhance the delivery of vital environmental services across the Borough.

We are seeking 2 proactive and confident Environmental Assistants with excellent interpersonal and communication skills to join our Environment & Climate Team. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in supporting the Council’s environmental objectives through the promotion of positive environmental practices and behaviour change across the Borough. We are flexible about your experience. You may be new to the industry, or be experienced in the environment, recycling and waste industry. Whatever your background, you’ll be passionate about sustainability and making a positive difference!

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Visiting residents’ homes to provide recycling advice and support.
  • Distributing promotional materials, starter packs, and recycling containers.
  • Promoting the use of Waste Reception Centres and Bring Bank facilities.
  • Investigating public use of recycling schemes and identifying any issues.
  • Monitoring and encouraging increased recycling participation.
  • Conducting user satisfaction surveys.
  • Advising households on bin usage and waste minimisation.
  • Providing regular feedback to your line manager and reporting any issues.
  • Recording detailed visit information to help target support effectively.
  • Engaging with the community and attending local events.
  • Responding to telephone, written, and email enquiries from residents.

What You’ll Bring:

  • A strong understanding of environmental, sustainability, and recycling issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with the local community.
  • Ability to manage time efficiently, work as part of a team and independently.
  • Competence in collecting and analysing data to inform service improvements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
  • GCSEs in Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above) or equivalent Level 2 qualifications.
  • Flexibility to be able to support evening/weekend events.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions (e.g. surveys and door-knocking).
  • A full driving licence.
